More Than a Component Library

A design system is not a component library — it's a shared language that enables multiple teams to build cohesive experiences independently. The most successful design systems we've helped build treat tokens, patterns, and principles as equal citizens alongside components.

The difference between a design system that gets adopted and one that gets abandoned usually comes down to three factors: contribution model, documentation quality, and governance structure.

Tokens First, Components Second

Starting with design tokens — colors, spacing, typography, motion — rather than components creates a foundation that's flexible enough to support diverse product needs while maintaining visual coherence.

  • Semantic tokens: Map raw values to meaningful names (primary-action, surface-elevated) that communicate intent rather than appearance
  • Multi-theme support: Design for theming from the start, even if you only have one theme today
  • Platform adaptation: Tokens that translate cleanly across web, mobile, and design tools

Governance Without Gatekeeping

The most effective governance model is "open contribution with review." Any team can propose additions or modifications, but changes to shared components go through a lightweight review process that ensures consistency and prevents duplication.

Measuring Success

We track design system health through adoption metrics (percentage of UI built with system components), contribution velocity (how quickly teams can add new patterns), and consistency scores (visual alignment across products). These metrics tell a more complete story than download counts or component totals.
